The Mesolithic period (or 'Middle Stone Age') in Britain dates from just after the end of the Pleistocene ('Ice Age') approximately 11,600 years ago, to the beginning of the Neolithic period about 4000 calibrated years BC.

These first people were hunter gatherers who were nomadic so their campsites and shelters were only temporary. Most of these homes seem to have been built on an earth bank and shaped like a wigwam by using pliant saplings which were covered with animal skins
